Les Faience d'Apt

The Moulin family are at the origins of the ceramics known as La Faïence du Pays d’Apt. César Moulin began his business in 1728 in Castellet, a village a few km from Apt, producing a reputed yellow glazed earthenware; his daughters developed the technique of mixing clays which became emblematic of Apt for almost three centuries. At its height in the 19th century there were over 200 faïenceries in the region Attracted by the richness of the mineral sources in the region these artists were able to blend the many different clays available in Apt with les ochres of Roussillon. The unique style highlights the different colours of the clay using a transparent enamel that brings the multi-colours alive.. The different colours of the clay are not only on the surface, but run right through the clay.

The technique is still practiced by a few creative specialists in Apt and the surrounding region who are innovating to explore new ways to work with the technique. Un vrai savour-faire de la region
